Today’s away match against Elmhurst was a resounding win for Brill United, with a final score of 9-0.
It was a one-sided game. Brill were quicker and stronger than Elmhurst, had most of the possession and played great passing football. They kept the ball well under pressure and pressed hard to get it back when they lost it.
Brill could have scored several times before finally breaking through when Jacob played a super through ball for Sid to run on to and place his shot in the corner of the net. Not long after, Elmhurst’s first-half keeper made a really good save, one of several, only to make a poor clearance that put his defence in trouble when pressed by Brill’s front line and Sid scored his second from close range.
At half time the score was 2-0 and it could have been many more. All the play was in Brill’s attacking half and despite every Elmhurst player seemingly in defence, Brill played some great football. They held on to the ball under pressure, found teammates with accurate passing and had positive high-energy runners in wide areas.
Shortly after the restart Sid got his hat-trick! Jacob’s full-blooded corner aimed close to the near post was cut out by their second-half keeper, who couldn’t hold it and spilled out of his grasp to Sid, who poked it into the net with one touch.
The game seemed to open up more with Elmhurst’s team changes. Harpo broke through their defence and hammered the ball just inches over the bar. Shortly after, Freddie scored with a powerful shot from close to the penalty spot to make it 4-0.
Next, Jacob scored powerfully as he sped through from the left to make it 5. Harpo got his well-deserved goal with a shot from outside the area that the keeper got his hands to but couldn’t stop. Freddie then got his 2nd, shooting strong enough for it to go through the keeper’s hands.
Ted, who had started on the right side of the back three, was moved up front for the final quarter and used his considerable pace to easily outrun the Elmhurst back line and place his shot in the corner of the net. Finally Jacob got an excellent second from a tight angle, blasting the ball in, giving the keeper no chance.
So 9-0 was the final score and fully deserved, reflecting Brill’s dominance. Eddie in goal and the back line of Ted, Sam and Arlo had little to do, but when they did, they were aware to the dangers and sharp. The midfield of Freddie and Harpo in the centre were dominant and Harry and Jacob as wide men couldn’t be contained. Striker Sid, who had a hat-trick before anyone else had scored, was named MOTM.
An entertaining afternoon of football that was a pleasure to watch.
